Heavy precipitation and mudslides in east Iceland

Last night a mudslide fell near two houses in Seyðisfjörður near Þjófalækur river.

One house is a residential building and the other is a storage facility. Both houses had been evacuated by mid-day yesterday due to heavy rainfall in the area.

There has been a great deal of precipitation in the area, but in these circumstances it is possible to expect rock fall and landslides near rivers and streams.

A few measures have been taken in eastern Iceland since yesterday due to the rainfall, especially in Eskifjörður and Seyðisfjörður. There has been a need to evacuate houses, make breaches in roads and shovel mud and rocks from rivers to relieve stress on structures to avoid damage.

The Icelandic Met Office has monitored the area closely in good cooperation with the police and civil protection. The police in Austfirðir have coordinated actions in the area in close cooperation with the municipalities and their employees
