The discharge of the Skaftá river at Sveinstindur peaked around 3 AM today, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. The discharge is believed to be close to 3000 cubic meters per second, which is more than has ever been recorded at the gauging station at Sveinstindur. The flood is still intensifying in the inhabited area and was over 2000 m3/s in Eldvatn by Ás at 10:00 o“clock today. The easternmost part of road F208, close to Skaftá river, has been closed. Travellers in the area are asked to respect temporary suspensions of roads and to follow directions given by the police.

Along with the flood water the release of volcanic gases is expected. The gases (i.e. H2S and SO2) move downwind from Skaftá towards the eastern part of Iceland.
