Serious bus accident in South Iceland

Nine people sustained serious injuries and one was killed when a coach carrying around fifty passengers went off the road near the village of Kirkjubaejarklaustur, South Iceland. The accident happened around 11:00 GMT. All the passengers are believed to be foreign tourists. Ambulances as well as other emergency units in the area have been mobilised. Helicopters from the Icelandic Coast Guard transport those who sustained the most serious injuries to hospitals in Reykjavik.

The local Red Cross Society has opened emergency aid shelter in Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Passengers who escaped unhurt or with minor injuries have been moved to there. Crisis and coordination centre in Reykjavik has been activated.

The Icelandic Ring Road (road number one) has been closed near Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Travellers are advised to take a detour by road no. 204.
