Alert phase in Seyðisfjörður due to the risk of landslides.

In consultation with the Chief of Police in East Iceland, the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police has decided to declare an Alert phase in Seyðisfjörður due to the risk of landslides.  Since yesterday, movements have been detected on a plate that lies between the landslide wound from 2020 and Búðará.  In addition, precipitation is forecasted in the area as the weekend draws to a close.  Outside that area, no movements have been detected.

In light of this information, the following houses will be evacuated:

At Fossgötu 4, 5, 7

Hafnargötu 10,12, 14, 16b, 18c and 25

Traffic on footpaths along the Búðará river is prohibited while the Alert phase is in force.

The evacuation is expected to last over the weekend in light of precipitation forecast in the area. Then the situation will be reassessed. The mass emergency shelter is being opened in Herðubreið, where everyone is welcome. It will be open until late in the evening.  You are also welcome to contact the 1717 Red Cross helpline or the online chat.

A press release will next be sent before noon tomorrow, Tuesday.
